The Nobel prize will be conferred to the European Union in Oslo today. The European Union will receive the prize from the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. The European Union will be represented by the President of the European Council, the President of the European Commission and the President of the European Parliament. The traditional Nobel lecture, on behalf of the EU, will be given by President Van Rompuy and President Barroso. Four young Europeans, winners of the online contest organised by the EU, will be joining the EU Delegation in Oslo to collect the prize. The European Union will give the award money (€930,000) to projects supporting children who are victims of war and conflicts. (EUROPA.EU)

Following tense talks that ran overtime into Saturday evening, delegates meeting at the UN climate summit in Doha managed to agree the essential items that had to be settled. However developing countries have finished the conference furious that the EU and United States refused to provide guarantees on long-term climate financing. (EUROPEANVOICE.COM)

The giant Russian gas producer Gazprom has launched construction work on the South Stream pipeline, which is to deliver Russian gas to the European Union via the Black Sea and avoiding Ukraine. It did so in Anapa, Russia, on 7 December, in the presence of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. (EUROPOLITICS.INFO)
